2009 Florida SuperCon Recap

rebels_1This was our first time attending Florida SuperCon, and we really enjoyed ourselves. It was small enough to not be overwhelming but large enough for there to be something for everyone. Everywhere you went there was something going on. Artists and vendors filled the bottom floor, while panels, work shops, and video games where going on in numerous rooms upstairs.

During the day Bruce Campbell and Ted Raimi entertained guests on the main stage. After the vendor area closed the convention turned its attention to the anime crowd with JPop star Stephanie Yanez performing followed by the costume contest and Smash Brothers Super Show.

We interviewed a lot of great people like Benjamin Button and Pirates Of The Caribbean star Peter Badalamenti. X-Men Noir artist and creator Dennis Calero and his wife,  illustrator Kristin Sorra, R.E.B.E.L.S writer Tony Bedard. Mitch and Elizabeth Breitweiser were so great they let us interview them not once but twice (the camera man had some problems with the footage taken from the first interview)! We also talked to Hugh Rookwood from Kosmic Comics about his current project Lung- Mei, and The Hive author Chris Berman. We first met Austin Janowsky earlier in the year at Mega Con, this time we got a chance to talk to him about his new project Stanley The Snowman.

We ran into some familiar faces too. The crew from Saint James were there showing off some of their new projects, we met one of the villains from Lucky Streak and the Crime Fighters, the Heroes Alliance were all there in some more amazing costumes, Arthur The Legend Continues writer Marin Pierro was in attendance.

We  met a bunch of local artists: Ozzy Fernandez from Razor Blade Apple Studios, Michael Valle from Tribunal Publications, Maurice Novembre , Hikaroo, Echo Chernik, Marcos Rivera, and Celine Chapus.

We met some people from the South Florida Browncoats and will be attending their event Can’t Stop The Serenity (a double feature of Serenity and Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog with proceeds going to the Humane Society and Equality Now) on June 27th.

We also got the chance to met Amanda Stevens and Test Subject X from the Super Human Experiment, and legendary comic book artist Allen Bellman.

We had a great time at the convention, check back next week for our interviews and footage from the show.

Part Two of our Interview with Jesse Young & Sandra Lanz of Saint James, Filmed At: Docking Bay 94.

Episode Four Interview with Jesse Young and Sandra Lanz from Saint James

A preview of what is coming from Comi Girl TV…

…we got a chance to find out when we sat down with Jesse Young (who co-owns Saint James with Robert James Russell) and Sandra Lanz (artist for Ex-Occultus) at Docking Bay 94 . The plan was to talk about Saint James and Ex-Occultus; what ensued was a two hour conversation about everything from Music (Jesse is a musician with quite an impressive list of accomplishments) to comic books, what we enjoy reading & how each of us got into comics. We are editing the footage now, and will post it shortly.

Ex-Occultus:

Ex-Occultus is the story of Francis Wakefield, and his protege, Hollander, as they search for fortune and treasure, righting wrongs as they go. The story is described as being a combination of elements from Indiana Jones, H.P Lovecraft, and the X-Files. Those influences are definitely noticeable in the eight page preview of the Badge of Langavat.

In Badge of Langavat, Wakefield and fellow occult hunter Fergus Duff battle a family of cursed werewolves, bent on sacrificing children from nearby villages in order to regain their humanity.

I must admit that this is not a comic I would normally pick up and read, but I am glad I did! All the pieces come together to make for a great book. Robert is a novelist who is bringing a lot of historical facts to the story. Sandra is an art major who specializes in portraits (she was discovered by Jesse at Docking Bay 94) her style fits the characters and time period very nicely. The preview ends with a cliff hanger and I for one cannot wait to see what happens next. Badge of Langavat is on schedule for a May release, for now you can check out the eight page preview.

Be sure to check the Who Is Saint James website regularly. They are constantly posting new story boards along with news from their other projects.
