We got a chance to interview Black Cherry Bombshells creators and Zuda winners Johnny Zito and Tony Trovarello. We have taken the sound file from our interview and turned it into a two part video. The first part of that video is below. There were two questions that did not make it into the videos, we have transcribed that part of the interview below.
Comi Girl: It is such a dark story but the artwork is so colorful. Did you go to Sasha and tell her how to draw it or did you give her and John free range to create what they want?
Tony: Originally the idea was Hanna Barbera and Powerpuff Girls those real thick lines. Like Genndy the guy that does Samurai Jack; we really like that style. If you look through the seventy pages that are out now how much it evolves from Sasha’s original indie looking comic, now it is polished. It has been described as Powerpuff girls on acid. We gave Sasha direction in the beginning but it is its own thing now.
Johnny: Because it is serialized and we write it six strips at a time it had an opportunity to evolve and find itself, after the first thirty pages we are on a real steady footing now. That is part of the comic book hard knocks we learned a lot in the first few weeks working with editors, timelines, and deadlines, it is a bigger thing then you think about when you are writing a comic book in your bedroom.
Comi Girl: It seems like every time I am done reading a strip, it ends on a cliff hanger, how hard is it for you to time that?
Tony: At first it was difficult, producing it every day it gets easier and easier. At first it was very difficult, was it enough of a cliff hanger…
Johnny: …yea when it ends does it make you want to turn the page, or does it make you want to click through (it’s a web comic) does it make you want to come back for the next one. At first we were really trying super hard to get those things down, but after the first thirty, it became its own thing, it became its own routine.
