Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

tengen-2Gainax has done it again. Awesome, original mech designs, over the top characters and sinister villains. They took all that I love about anime and wrapped it up in one series. Oh yeah don’t forget about giant robots.

Gurren Lagann is about a boy named Simon and his best friend Kamina, who grew up underground with the rest of the human race, reaching for the stars, literally and figuratively. They start their journey when a Gunman (mecha), one of the bad guys, crashes into their underground village. After defeating the monster with the help of beautiful young girl from another village named Yoko and a mini Gunmen dug up by Simon, they realize that the human race used to live on the surface of the planet. They start exploring the surface world where more humans join them and their little group grows into Team Dai-Gurren. They fight to liberate the humans from the Beastmen, lead by the powerful and downright scary Spiral King, and that’s just the beginning.

The character development progresses very rapidly. So, if you miss a couple episodes you will get lost as the series continues. That is probably the only bad thing about the series.

Season two starts seven years after the defeat of the Spiral King. The characters are all grown up and many change their whole personality because of the new threat, the Anti-Spirals, who are more bad ass that the Spiral King and his Beastmen. The action is intense and the ending is worth the wait. But make sure you watch each episode. There is a theme that repeats itself thru the storyline. Here’s a hint, humans have the potential to do anything we set our minds to. We just have to keep moving forward. Just that thought alone should make this series a fulfilling one.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is available now on DVD 6 volumes or Limited or Special edition box set with bonus music CD by Bandai Entertainment.
