For the past three years Mattel has released Barbie as Greek Goddesses. It all started in 2008 with Barbie as Medusa, last year Barbie as Aphrodite was released, and just a few short days ago Barbie as Athena hit the market…I received mine yesterday, and she is AMAZING!
As with the other Goddesses Barbies, Athena stays pretty true to the images released by Mattel. Her armor is a little more sliver than gold, and her lip liner is a shade or two darker. Up close the lip liner was a bit of a turn off for me, but on film and when displayed it looks perfect.
Athena’s dress is a bit shorter than I would have liked, but her flowing cape and shied probably work better with it, and the shorter length allows you to see her very detailed boots.
Her shield and spear are great additions (you just need to make sure you do not accidentally cut the rubber holding them to her hands when taking her out of the package), but my favorite part of this doll is her helmet and the gorgeous mane of dark red hair that flows from the top…it makes her look like the goddess of war that she is, after taking her out of the box I found myself wanting to watch 300
Barbie as Athena costs $100 and is available exclusively from Barbie Collector, she a gold label doll (meaning no more than 25,000 will be made), so order yours before it’s too late!
You can watch the “Unboxing” of Athena on our You Tube Page.

Now does Mattel really expect parents to buy this toy for the young girls in their lives? This looks like the type of toy that only serious Barbie collectors and comic book fans would be interested in.

@sam Any dolls released by “Barbie Collector” are collector dolls and not recommended for young girls..the website has them listed as “For the adult collector”.
They actually sell out pretty fast, but you are right I probably wouldn’t have gotten any of the dolls I have if it weren’t for my love of comics.
