Birds of Prey was a great series that only lasted one season. The Aquaman pilot episode (download it from iTunes if you haven’t already seen it, you won’t be disappointed) staring now Green Arrow Justin Hartley was promising, yet never saw the light of day. Just last year The Graysons, a series based on my favorite male superhero Dick Grayson, was in the works, yet it never even made it to the pilot stage (which according to the variety article is because DC and Christopher Nolan didn’t want it to over lap the Batman film franchise).

Am I excited about the prospect? Of course! I think a character like Raven, whose mother is human and father demon, would provide a darkness much like Smallville had in its early days that would draw viewers in. But I have been following entertainment news long enough to know that nothing is final until a series order is actually made by the network.

This week the Fall Television season officially began, and the major networks debuted their new shows. While I didn’t have the time or the desire to watch every new show (there is a ridiculous amount this year), I did watch and review a number of them…

Nikita
Thursdays 9/8c on The CW
I usually enjoy watching shows that feature a strong female lead, so I was excited when I first saw the previews for Nikita.

The show’s premise is that there is a “division” that recruits troubled young girls, tells them that they have been given a second chance and have been recruited to serve their country. Their deaths have been faked therefore they have no ties to their former life. They go through a grueling training camp, and come out trained assassins. Nikita is one of the division’s best, until her finance is killed, and she realizes they betrayed her. Now she will stop at nothing to expose their covert mission.

As much as I wanted to like this show, I just couldn’t…in fact, I couldn’t even make it through the first episode, it was that bad. The acting stinks, the fight scenes are so unbelievable they are painful to watch. I really don’t expect this show to last very long, although it is on the CW, so you never know 3 million viewers might be enough to keep it on the air.

$#*! My Dad Says
Thursdays 8:30/7:30c on CBS
I wanted to like this show for one reason: William Shatner…

The show is based on Justin Halpern’s twitter feed, where he has gained a huge following tweeting the outrageous, and politically incorrect things that his father says. William Shatner plays Ed Goodson, whose son Henry moves in with him after losing his job.

Every comedic line that came out of Shatner’s mouth felt force and the laugh track wore on my nerves. Don’t get me wrong there was nothing wrong with William Shatner’s acting…it is the writing that was horrible, yet $#*! My Dad Says was number one in its time slot, even beating out 30 Rock! I don’t know if that trend will keep up, or if The Big Bang Theory’s lead in audience will fade away.

The Event
Mondays 8/7c on NBC
I had very low expectations when I sat down to watch the Event…maybe that is why I didn’t dislike it as much as I thought I would.

The Event is pretty confusing so I took the synopsis directly from NBC: The Event is an emotional, high-octane conspiracy thriller that follows Sean Walker (Jason Ritter, “The Class”), an everyman who investigates the mysterious disappearance of his would-be fiancée Leila (Sarah Roemer, “Disturbia”), and unwittingly begins to expose the biggest cover-up in U.S. history.

I like shows that keep you guessing (Dexter is one of my favorites), but The Event tries a little too hard. It starts in the present day, then jumps back eight days, starts following a different character, goes back to the original character in the present day again, only to jump back thirteen days…the whole show was like that! The first episode ends with a pretty big cliff hanger, and while I do want to know what happened (I already have an idea), I don’t know if it was a strong enough to make me want to watch an entire series based on it, I will probably give it a second chance, but I really doubt I will make it past that.

The Defenders
Wednesdays 10/9c on CBS
I didn’t plan on watching this series, but I was lazy and there was nothing else interesting on, so I figured I would give it a chance.

The Defenders follows two Las Vegas defense attorneys. No matter how large or small a case may be, Nick Morelli (Jim Belushi) gives it his all. On the personal side of things he is working hard to repair his broken marriage and stay present in his son’s life. Pete Kaczmarek (Jerry O’Connell ) is very passionate about the law…and fast cars, beautiful women, and expensive clothes. Also at the firm of Morelli and Kaczmarek is Lisa “an enthusiastic young attorney looking to put her exotic dancing days behind her” and Zoe the spunky assistant.

Jim Belushi and Jerry O’Connell have great chemistry, and the show has a great balance of heart and humor…for once my laziness paid off!

Running Wilde
Tuesdays 9:30/8:30c on Fox
I am a fan of Keri Russell, Will Arnett, & Arrested Development so I had to check it out.

It is a simple, yet hard to explain, so here is a brief synopsis from Fox: From the Emmy Award-winning creator and the star of the critically acclaimed FOX series “Arrested Development” comes RUNNING WILDE, a romantic comedy starring Will Arnett (“Arrested Development,” “30 Rock”) as STEVE WILDE, a filthy-rich, immature playboy trying desperately to win (or buy) the heart of his childhood sweetheart, EMMY KADUBIC (Keri Russell, “Waitress,” “Felicity”), the uber-liberal humanitarian who got away – all told through the perspective of a 12-year-old girl.”

Running Wilde probably won’t be a runaway hit, but it does have some of the same offbeat humor as Arrested Development. Will Arnett and Keri Russell are well cast as Steve and Emmy, and I am a sucker for anything with narration, so I enjoyed the show.

Lone Star
Mondays 9/8c on Fox
The previews for this show intrigued me enough to want to check it out, but not enough to choose it over Two and A Half Men, so I had to catch it a few days later.

The tag line for the show pretty much sums it up “ROBERT/BOB ALLEN (newcomer James Wolk) is a charismatic and brilliant schemer who has meticulously constructed two lives in two different parts of Texas. He’s juggling two identities and two women in two very different worlds – all under one mountain of lies.”

Even though Robert may seem like a womanizing con artist, he actually has a heart and conscience, and is extremely likeable. He might be the bad guy, but you really want things to work out for him. The writing and acting make this one of my favorite new shows of the season.

Undercovers
Wednesdays 8/7c on NBC
Sexy stars and espionage…of course I had to watch Undercovers!

Steven and Samantha are retired spies who now live their lives as a normal married couple who own a catering company. All that changes when they are reactivated to locate and rescue their missing friend and fellow spy, Nash. While on their mission Steven and Samantha begin to realize that the excitement and danger that they walked away from five years earlier, just might be what their marriage is missing.

Undercovers ties with Lone Star as my favorite new show of the season. The show’s effects and locations are worthy of a Hollywood blockbuster (creator J.J. Abrams might have something to do with that), and the chemistry between Boris Kodjoe and Gugu Mbatha-Raw makes the show very believable.

Tell us, what has been your favorite (or least favorite) show of the new Television season?
