I have to admit, I did not check the news or read any comic books during my vacation last week. So I was a little taken back when I learned of Superman’s decision to renounce his US citizenship in Action Comics #900.

While I do I think of Superman as being American (as you can see here), cries from news outlets (although does anyone take Fox news seriously) to boycott DC Comics and Warner Bros, is a gross overreaction. Clark Kent is the man behind the suit and this announcement takes nothing away from his upbringing or beliefs.

Superman is the first and oldest superhero, and while that endures him to us it also (at times) makes him feel outdated. DC Comics is desperately trying to make him more relevant and current, and making him a member of the global community is a first step to revamping his image.

To me (maybe it is because I am a DC girl) dropping “Captain America” from the Cap movie is more of a slap in the face than the announcement that the American Way is no longer enough in a world that is connected like never before.

While nothing has been confirmed by Warner Brothers, Deadline is reporting that Zack Snyder will be directing the new Superman reboot, as soon as he wraps up his work on Sucker Punch.

I am a fan of Zack Snyder, the guy made The Watchmen, watchable, which if you ever read the graphic novel you know that was no small feat.

He is also the man responsible for me (and I am sure countless others) screaming Sparta! 300 is one of my all time favorite movies, although the “Cameraman” doesn’t let me watch it that often, he says I get to hyper & violent :P .

I am intrigued about the possibility of Snyder directing Superman, although I do have to say, I don’t understand all the critique of Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns. It was an amazing Superman story, and while I have heard many complaints about Brandon Routh, he was a very believable Superman and Clark Kent, I cry every time I watch that movie. The story was that touching and when Lex kills Superman you believe it.

I think people forget Superman is not Batman, he is not dark, his villains are not as evil. He lives in the sunshine, Batman lives in the dark. While he is my favorite Superhero, I have to admit Batman is more entertaining.

While I am beyond excited for a new Superman film, I am also realistic. It doesn’t matter who they bring on board to direct, write, or oversee the film, Superman will not match the success of Chris Nolan’s Batman films.

DC announced today that J. Michael Straczynski will be taking over not just Wonder Woman but also Superman.

Straczynski is a very accomplished writer, he recently wrote the four issue “Red Circle” for DC, and wrote may of the episodes for Babylon 5.
