Halo Legends is a series of short anime films based on the Halo video games. I played the Halo games but didn’t realize how large and detailed the Halo universe is. These short films really open it up to fans of Halo. Those that follow anime will probably recognize some of the directors and studios that created these short films.

Studio Bones who created Eureka 7, one of my favorite anime of all time, created the short titled Prototype, which was one of my favorites. It follows an UNSC Sgt, Call Sign: Ghost. He is sent into hostile territory to evacuate and destroy a weapons prototype…intense action and a great story of redemption.

Toei Animation, from Dragonball fame, handles a film called Odd One Out. My kids really enjoyed this one. It’s an over the top and humorous compared to the others. It follows a bungling Spartan and his adventures when he falls out of his transport. …lots of action, and jokes in this one.

Then there is the short directed by Shinji Aramaki, the creator of countless Mecha and director of the CG animated Appleseed films. This is a CG animated short about Master Chief and four other Spartans as they try to rescue Dr. Halsey the creator of the Spartan program from the Covenant… lots of action and beautiful animation.

Even if you are not a fan of the Halo series this movie takes you deeper into the world of Halo and actually makes you more of a fan. As an anime fan you will love the stand alone stories and enjoy the work of five of the very best anime studios. You won’t be disappointed.

There are a lot of talented people in the world from artist, writers, musicians, and the list goes on, but when those talented, well…more like gifted individuals collaborate on a project, then something special can truly come from it. ‘In Our Talens’ is a song by the group known as the Bowerbirds which is comprised of Phil Moore and Beth Tacular, both of whom are designers by trade. When they started on their musical journey they were living in an abandoned building in a swampy forest, with the time spent there, inspiring them to write songs that would make their first EP “Danger at Sea”. From there it led to going on the road living out of a van settling in North Carolina and calling an Air Stream trailer home, all the while making music and writing songs.

Fast forward to the present and you can find them finishing up their log cabin home when not on tour, and being eco-conscious at the same time. All of this reflects in their music, with Phil having a voice that could be described as organic. His songs don’t feel rushed; they feel as if you’re a city dweller that drives out on country roads just to remember what fresh air is supposed to feel like…something that I haven’t had in quite some time (and I’m probably in desperate need of). I bring this up only for the fact, that anyone who spends enough time with me knows, that the music being made by the Bowerbirds is not something that usually gets airplay through my headphones, a testament to the fact, that the Bowerbirds can offer you that soothing southern comfort that your little heart may crave for every now and then. This now brings us to the other gifted person, Mr. Alan Poon. A photographer, director, and cinematographer, who was able to craft a beautiful stop-motion video for the Bowerbirds. I’m going to end it here with you watching Alan’s handiwork, and me, going out to find a spot in the city to get some fresh air…

Some of those movies, at least the romantic ones, had a certain look and feel to them, especially those scenes that were held in the nighttime. When I see a modern film, or even a music video that tries to emulate that look from the past, it somehow comes off as feeling a little empty.

Well, awhile ago, I came across this short piece that captures the essence of days gone by. There is absolutely no dialog whatsoever, and the entire piece was nothing more then a VFX (visual effects) showcase. Yet, somehow despite those two seemingly negative points, the team at Spy Films captured a moment in time that could be described as something that resides in many a mere fantasy. If you’re a romantic at heart or an aspiring VFX creator then check the piece out, I’m sure you’ll like it as I did.
