Girl Comics #1

Girl Comics is a three issue series from Marvel, written, edited, and penciled by some of the top women in the industry. Issue one consisted of six short stories, an introduction, a pin up of She Hulk, two spotlights on women who helped shape Marvel in the early days, and bios on all the creators featured in the issue.

I love comics that consist of short stories by different writers and artists…and this one was no exception. I enjoyed all the stories, but my favorite had to be  Trina Roberts’ story about Venus. I love Greek mythology, and the sixties…so how could I not enjoy her story about Venus coming to earth in 1969 to get the job she had twenty years earlier as editor of Beauty Magazine back? Stephanie Buscema’s artwork really made the story come to life.

I also loved the She Hulk pin-up by Sana Takeda and hope there is more from her in issues two and three. The two spotlights featured in the comic were a great addition. It was nice to hear about how these women helped shape Marvel, and I love the fact that “Fab Flo” not only still works for the company, but that she proof read her own spotlight!

Last but not least I love the brief bios at the end of the issue, it was refreshing to get the opportunity to read about the people behind the comic you just finished reading.

I really like what Marvel is doing with Girl Comics and cannot wait for issue two to drop next month.

@ghettoManga I would love to see it as an ongoing series too! I am really excited about everything Marvel is doing for the Year of Women, but I am more curious to see what ongoing series based on Women characters continue after this year.
I loved all the short series DC had in 2008 & 2009 based on women (Wonder Girl, Vixen, Huntress, Raven), but what I really love is that now Power Girl, Batgirl, and Zatanna have their own monthly series. I can’t even tell you how much I am enjoying Gotham City Sirens, or how excited I am for Birds of Prey to come back, they even gave Detective Comics to Batwoman & the Question! I just hope Marvel follows suit and gives some more of their female characters monthly books (I can’t wait to read Black Widow, but I hope there is more to come).
