Today Marvel Worldwide announced that Axel Alonso has been named as Editor-in-Chief of Marvel Entertainment.
Joe Quesada who has served as Editor-in-Chief since 2000 can now focus more on his new role as Chief Creative Officer of Marvel Entertainment, which he was given in June of last year.
Axel Alonso has been working for Marvel since 2000 first as a Senior Editor, then as Vice President, Executive Editor. He has worked on AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, X-MEN, X-STATIX, RAWHIDE KID, and was instrumental in the creation of Marvel MAX.
I don’t know if this announcement comes as a surprise to anyone, it would be impossible for Joe Quesada to continue to work as both Editor-in-chief and creative officer…not really sure why Marvel let him continue in both roles for as long as they did. Don’t get me wrong I like Joe Quesada and think he has done amazing things for Marvel, but NOBODY could successfully pull off being in charge of EVERYTHING. This move will let him focus on his new responsibilities while making sure the publishing side of things is in good hands.
Head over to Marvel’s site for more on this story and comments from both Joe Quesada and Axel Alonso.
