Robotech got me into anime, period. It was the most influential anime cartoon in my life. It made me fall in love with the culture and artwork. It was not the first anime I ever saw but made me realize, how awesome it is. I haven’t gone back and watched the series since I was about 10 years old. I was always reluctant to watch it again. I didn’t want to spoil the youthful vision I had of it. But having kids of my own now, I wanted to share this experience with them, so I decided to watch it again from the beginning.
The animation is definitely dated. But the characters and storyline were as I remember it, actually deeper then I remember. Stories of love, death, and bravery permeate the series. Looking back I don’t think I remember the stories being so intense.
The main character Rick Hunter, is a jet pilot. An alien fleet called the Zentradi attacks
Earth, and he is drawn into the military. He falls in love with a girl Lynn Minmay, who he rescues, and most of the series involves the tension between their relationships. Lisa Hayes his commanding officer then gets drawn into a love triangle of sorts. Other then the awesome Veritech fighters and space battles the story is quite mature.
The series ends with the Earth force defeating the alien Zentradi forces. Rick then has to decide between Lisa Hayes and Lynn Minmay. As fans of the series you should already know who he chooses. If not, I won’t spoil it for you. Watch the series to find out, you will enjoy it.

Thanks for the link Tana. I would love a Hollywood produced Robotech feature film. I heard some rumors about one with Tobey Maguire playing the lead as Rick Hunter. Oh well I guess the closest I have is to see how the Cowboy Bebop movie does.
