neongeneisOne of the best, if not weirdest anime ever. I had to review this one, since the new movies are coming out, which I can’t wait to see. Gainax has always been known for their quality animation and unique stories. Evangelion takes the cake. The series was controversial because of the way it “so called” ended. There was a different ending for the Japanese release and the English release.  I’ve only seen English.

It revolves around a young boy named Shinji Ikari whose father runs N.E.R.V. An organization whose purpose is to protect mankind from the angels. There are a lot of religious overtures, but it does not detract from the story. Shinji is reluctantly recruited to pilot one of their giant mecha known as Eva’s to save the world. He is your usual angst ridden anime teen. There are two other pilots Rei and Asuka, who are young girls and are quite opposite from each other. Rei is the quiet type while Asuka is the loud obnoxious type. They fight the angels, which are all different, defeating them a different way each time. I am not going to get into the ending since there is supposedly going to be a new ending with the new films.

The animation is really good and so are the character designs and development. The stories really flow into each other well. Each episode makes you want to see the next. The series goes by pretty quick until you get to the end. That’s when it gets weird. If you are going to see the films, I wouldn’t suggest watching the series, it will probably just confuse you. Neon Genesis Evangelion is definitely a great series to watch and I recommend it.
