I am a huge Cowboy Bebop fan, and now that there is a live-action Cowboy Bebop movie in the works I thought I might review the anime Cowboy Bebop movie. I hope they do the anime justice in the live action version. The anime movie was kind of like a feature length episode, which is a good thing.
The movie starts off with Spike and Jet catching the bounty on a few local thugs. Meanwhile Faye is trying to catch the bounty on a local computer hacker. While on his trail she realizes she has trailed the wrong bad guy who inexplicitly destroys a tanker truck, apparently, releasing a toxin into the air. He is unharmed because of some military experiment that has made him immune to it. How come everything is always a military experiment?
Anyway the Bebop crew gets wrapped into the case and Spike is mortally wounded. The strange terrorist Vincent is planning on poisoning the entire population and it is up to Spike and the gang to come to the rescue. They succeed and just like in the episodes they don’t really get a bounty after all their efforts.
The animation is super excellent. The air battle between Spike and his Swordfish II against some cool looking military aircraft is probably the best dogfight I have ever seen. There is a lot of humor, and the characters stay true to form.
I hope the live action will be just as good. Actually I hope it is better but most anime to live action don’t really fare well. Hopefully this one will change that trend.
