I’m sure everyone knows how much I love giant mecha and action packed anime. My last few reviews have been a little different, to say the least. Well I’m back to my beloved genre with Macross Plus. Now I have been a huge Macross fan since I first saw Robotech when I was about eight years old. Macross Plus brings those fond memories back.
Macross Plus was a 4 episode anime OVA which was originally released in 1994. It was one of the first anime to use CG effects and blend them with cell animation. The result is dizzying air battles, fighters transforming and dog fighting in blinding speed. It takes place on a parallel world in the Macross universe. The story involves two test pilots, Guld and Isamu, who are in competition for the rights to manufacture UN Spacey’s next veritech fighter. One ship is manually controlled while the other is controlled by the pilots mind.
It also involves a love triangle of sorts between Guld, Isamu, and their long time friend 
Myung. Apparently the three of them grew up together and had a falling out. Myung is the manager for an AI pop idol named Sharon Apple. I see some similarities with the Macross Frontier series.
Anyway the AI somehow becomes aware and Guld and Isamu have to work together to defeat her. I loved this anime. Not just because of the action but the relationship between the characters are well fleshed out. They have distinct personalities that the audience can relate to. There have been a few Macross movies that have been disappointing but this is not one of them, and even though it is dated it still hold up pretty well against modern anime.
A must see.
